“Why Are My Gums Black?” You’re Not the Only One Asking

“Why Are My Gums Black?” You’re Not the Only One Asking

Are you self-conscious about black or discolored gums? Have you looked at treatment options and are disappointed with what you were offered?

For many, dark gums are more than just a cosmetic concern, it can cause them to feel self-conscious and frustrated, especially when clear answers are hard to find.

We have spoken with patients who were told their dark gums were “normal,” but still didn’t feel comfortable with how their smile looked. Others were bounced between providers without a clear diagnosis or helpful solution. If that has been your experience, we want you to know that your concerns are valid and there is a way forward.

At McCawley Center for Laser Periodontics and Implants, we provide compassionate, evidence-based care for patients who want to reduce dark gum pigmentation safely and comfortably.

What Causes Black or Dark Gums?

The most common reason for dark or black gums is melanin, the same pigment that gives color to your skin, eyes, and hair.

Some people naturally have more melanin in their gum tissue. This is especially common in individuals with darker skin tones. It’s completely normal and not a sign of disease.

Other possible causes of dark gum pigmentation include:

  • Smoking or tobacco use
  • Certain medications
  • Previous trauma or surgical treatment
  • Long-standing inflammation or gum disease

These dark areas might appear as spots, patches, or overall discoloration along the gum line. Although the pigmentation itself is not a health concern, many patients feel it impacts the appearance of their smile and are interested in addressing it for cosmetic reasons.

Common Concerns About Dark or Black Gums

Even though melanin-related pigmentation is benign, that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be addressed, especially if it affects your confidence.

We have seen how difficult it can be for patients who feel like they are the only ones asking about this. But the truth is, questions like “Why are my gums black?” or “How can I get rid of dark spots on my gums?” come up often, both in our office and in online communities.

You deserve answers. And if treatment feels right to you, you deserve options that are safe, gentle, and effective.

Laser Gum Depigmentation

For patients concerned about dark or patchy gum tissue, laser gum depigmentation offers a safe and conservative treatment option.

Sometimes referred to as gum bleaching (though no bleaching agents are used), this cosmetic procedure gently removes the outermost layer of gum tissue where melanin pigment is concentrated.

As the tissue heals, new cells regenerate with a lighter, more even appearance. Many patients see a natural pink tone return to the treated areas.

We use a precise Nd:YAG dental laser that allows for minimal discomfort and quick recovery. There are no scalpels, no sutures, and no lengthy healing process.

Procedure Details

  • Consultation: We begin with a full examination to ensure your gums are healthy. If you have had periodontal disease in the past or currently have gum inflammation, we will address that first.
  • Laser treatment: The laser gently removes areas of pigmentation without damaging surrounding tissue.
  • Recovery: Most patients report only minor discomfort and return to daily activities the same day. We will provide instructions to support healing.

Results are long-lasting for many patients, especially if they avoid smoking and maintain good oral hygiene. In some cases, patients with strong genetic pigmentation may see gradual repigmentation over time, but often to a much lesser degree.
