Gum Disease Treatment: How to Avoid the Pain of Traditional Surgery

Gum Disease Treatment: How to Avoid the Pain of Traditional Surgery

For many patients, the words “gum surgery” spark real fear. Traditional periodontal procedures often involve scalpels, stitches, and long recoveries that cause patients to put off treatment.
At McCawley Center for Laser Periodontics & Implants, we offer a modern alternative: the LANAP® protocol. This advanced laser treatment eliminates infection, saves teeth, and allows you to heal faster with far less discomfort.

What Happens During Traditional Gum Surgery?

Conventional gum surgery (sometimes called flap surgery) requires incisions to peel back the gum tissue for access to deep pockets of infection.

Steps often include:

  • Scalpel incisions along the gum line
  • Stitches to close the tissue after treatment
  • Removal of gum tissue, often leading to gum recession
  • Grinding on bone
  • Long recovery times, sometimes weeks of discomfort

While effective at cleaning the roots of teeth, this approach is invasive and can change the natural appearance of your smile.

LANAP: A Patient-Friendly Alternative

LANAP® (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) takes a completely different approach. Instead of scalpels and sutures, a soft tissue laser is used to gently target and remove only the diseased tissue. Healthy gums are left untouched, and the laser energy stimulates bone regeneration around the teeth.

Benefits include:

  • No cutting or stitches
  • Minimal pain and swelling
  • Faster healing
  • Preservation of gum line
  • FDA-cleared to regenerate bone and tissue

Many of our patients once feared gum surgery, only to find LANAP was far gentler than they imagined. You can read their stories here: Patient Testimonials.

Side-by-Side Comparison: Traditional Surgery vs. LANAP

Understanding the differences makes it easier to see why so many patients prefer laser treatment over conventional surgery.

The LANAP Procedure

Here is what the treatment process looks like when performed at our office.

  1. Comprehensive Diagnosis: Your visit begins with a full exam, including bacterial analysis using high-powered microscopes. We are one of the only clinics in the world to identify and treat bacteria, parasites, viruses, and fungi that contribute to oral infections.
  2. The Laser Procedure: A dental laser is used to precisely remove microscopic pathogens and inflamed gum tissue. Ultrasonic root debridement then cleans the tooth surface without damaging it. A second pass of laser energy forms a natural blood clot, sealing the area and kickstarting healing.
  3. Post-Treatment Recovery: Because the LANAP protocol is minimally invasive, most patients return to normal activities the very next day. We recommend a soft diet, antiseptic rinses, and, after initial healing, the use of a water flosser with an antiseptic to maintain hygiene. Healing is much faster and more comfortable compared to traditional surgery.

A Better Path to Gum Disease Treatment

Traditional gum surgery may stop infection, but it often does so at the cost of pain, long recovery times, and changes to your smile.

LANAP offers a modern alternative, one that targets disease without cutting or stitches, preserves healthy gum tissue, and helps you heal quickly. If you have been putting off gum disease treatment, give us a call to find out how laser therapy can restore your health and protect your smile.

FAQs

Can gum disease be reversed?

Yes, in its earliest stage (gingivitis). More advanced gum disease cannot be reversed, but it can be treated and managed with procedures like LANAP.

What happens if gum disease is left untreated?

Untreated gum disease can cause bone loss, loose teeth, and eventually tooth loss. It also increases risks for health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.

How can I prevent gum disease from coming back?

Daily brushing and flossing, regular dental cleanings, and follow-up periodontal care are the best ways to prevent recurrence. Managing risk factors like smoking and diabetes also helps.
