Sinus Lift in Fort Lauderdale
A sinus lift is a specialized surgical procedure that helps create the bone structure needed to support dental implants in the upper jaw.
Also referred to as sinus augmentation, this treatment is often recommended when there is insufficient bone height in the upper molar and premolar region or when the sinuses are too close to the jaw for safe implant placement.
We offer sinus lift bone grafting at our periodontal clinic in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
What Is a Sinus Lift?
If you have experienced bone loss in the upper jaw, whether from tooth loss, periodontal disease, or natural anatomy, you may not have enough residual bone height to secure a dental implant.
A sinus lift adds bone graft material between your sinus membrane and the sinus floor, increasing bone volume and making successful implant placement possible.

Why a Sinus Augmentation May Be Necessary
This procedure may be recommended for a variety of reasons, including:
- Missing upper teeth near the back of the mouth
- Bone loss due to periodontal disease
- Bone resorption following tooth less or tooth extractions
- Natural proximity of the sinus cavity to the upper teeth
- Preparation for full arch dental implants or individual implants in the upper jaw
If a patient has inadequate bone volume, attempting an implant procedure without addressing it may lead to complications, such as implant failure or sinus perforation.
Sinus Lift Cost
The cost of a sinus lift varies depending on the complexity of the case, the type of bone graft used, and whether it is performed in conjunction with another procedure such as implant placement. At our practice, we provide a full treatment plan and review all costs during your initial consultation.
Sinus Lift Procedure Details
Sinus lift surgery is performed by Dr. Mark McCawley, a board-certified dental implant surgeon with extensive experience in sinus augmentation and advanced implant placement.
We use advanced 3D imaging and diagnostic tools to evaluate bone volume and sinus anatomy, ensuring accurate and personalized treatment planning for each patient.
The procedure is typically performed using local anesthesia, with sedation available for added comfort. The most common technique when a significant increase of bone is needed is the lateral window technique.
During the procedure, the surgeon accesses the sinus cavity by creating a small opening in the side of the upper jaw bone. The sinus membrane is gently lifted, and bone graft material is inserted into the newly created space.
When less bone is needed a less invasive approach called a crestal sinus lift is possible. With this technique the sinus is accessed through the same hole the implant is being placed into and the sinus is compressed up with the pressure from specialized tools and the bone grafting material. This procedure prevents the need for a second hole but less lifting of the sinus is possible than the lateral approach.
Platelet rich fibrin is used with this procedure where the growth factors from your own natural blood is harvested and mixed with the bone graft to aid in healing and to reduce complications.
Over the course of several months of healing, the grafted material integrates with your natural bone, stimulating bone growth and increasing the thickness of the sinus floor. This new bone provides the necessary support for a future dental implant.
Depending on your case, implant placement may be performed as a single procedure, meaning the implant will be placed at the same time as the bone graft. Simultaneous placement is more commonly performed with a crestal approach sinus lift.
Healing Stages After a Sinus Lift
Healing after a sinus lift typically occurs in stages and may vary based on your overall health and the complexity of your procedure. In general, most patients can expect:
- First 1–2 weeks: Mild swelling and discomfort, which can be managed with over-the-counter or prescribed medication. You will be advised to avoid blowing your nose or heavy lifting to protect the sinus membrane.*
- Weeks 2–6: Gum tissue heals over the grafted site, and you may return to normal eating and brushing habits with some minor restrictions.
- Months 2–6: Bone regeneration takes place gradually as the graft material integrates with your natural bone. You will attend follow-up visits to monitor progress through exams and imaging.
We will let you know when the bone has matured enough to support a dental implant. In some cases, implant placement may be delayed until full bone integration is confirmed.
*You will receive detailed aftercare instructions before your procedure.
Symptoms of a Failed Sinus Lift
While the sinus lift procedure is safe and effective in the hands of an experienced specialist, complications are possible. In many cases, corrective treatment can resolve the issue and still allow for successful implant placement later.
FAQs About Sinus Lift Bone Grafting
Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort after the procedure, similar to the soreness following a routine dental extraction. Occasionally bruising occurs when a lateral approach is needed. Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually sufficient to manage symptoms, and sedation options are available for added comfort during the procedure.
A sinus lift is a routine and generally safe outpatient surgical procedure when performed by a qualified specialist. Although it involves delicate anatomy, complications are rare and recovery is typically smooth.
Initial healing occurs within 1 to 2 weeks, but full recovery and bone integration can take between 4 to 6 months. Dr. Mark McCawley will monitor healing closely and determine when it is appropriate to place a dental implant.
No, your facial appearance will not change. The procedure is performed inside the mouth and does not alter external facial features. Some swelling may occur temporarily, but this resolves within a few days.
