Maintaining Your Oral Health This Winter

Did you know that cold temperatures can be tough on your teeth? There are many different circumstances that can affect your oral health during the winter, and can lead to issues such as dry mouth, sensitive teeth and canker sores. We have identified some tips for you to follow to help ensure your smile stays healthy this winter.

Managing Symptoms

Dry mouth is common during the winter, often because the air is dry and we forget to stay up on our fluids. Drinking plenty of water and using a dehumidifier can help reduce your dry mouth symptoms, and also help prevent bacterial growth. If you experience sensitive teeth, try switching to a desensitizing toothpaste or limiting sugary foods. Dealing with a canker sore? Foods and drinks high in acidity, such as juices, wine and tart desserts, can slow the healing process. Avoid these if possible, or limit your intake as you enjoy your holiday festivities.

Flu Season Is Here

Do not forget that the winter months can also mark an increase in sickness. If you do end up under the weather, try these tips to help reduce further discomfort:

• Stay hydrated. Increasing your fluid intake can help boost your immune system and reduce the risk of dry mouth.
• Gargle with warm salt water once a day to reduce bacteria in the mouth.
• Rinse with water after consuming sugary cough drops or cough syrup. Better yet, try the sugar-free varieties if available.
• Remember to brush and floss.
Replacing your toothbrush after you have been ill is a great way to stop reinfection, and keep your mouth happy!
